Why Our Elders Can Teach Us Something Today

Obviously, all of today’s news coverage is going to the election. The updates and stories have been coming all day: last minute campaigning, potentially dangerous mistakes, coverage from the polling booths, and oh so many projections. Even sorting through the news has been difficult. But the best story I saw all day? “Determined Texas woman, 92, votes in an ambulance.” The AP story, via Yahoo News, goes something like this:

“Betty Owen is 92 and after a stroke four years ago, needs a feeding tube and can’t walk. But she was determined not to miss Tuesday’s election. She arrived at her polling place on a gurney in an ambulance, where an election judge and support worker climbed aboard with an electronic voting machine and let her cast her ballot.

‘And you have voted,’ precinct judge Sam Green said after Owen pushed the red button finalizing her choices. ‘You know, you look so pretty in that red dress.’”

Freedom to vote and be heard, no matter your background, age, race, or opinion. And a passion to always voice that opinion without letting anything stand in your way. Even if you’re 92 and can’t get yourself to the voting booth.

My grandpa also voted from his hospital bed. That’s what being an American is all about, yes?

  1. So very true, Chrissy! My 83-year-old grandma got on the senior bus and took her walker to the polls yesterday to vote! Our elders really know the importance of exercising that hard-earned right to vote. I’m so glad this election brought that understanding to so many younger folks, too!
